Henry arrived in a nearby village. He united the women of the village. With the help of these he served the injured. After this, Henry wrote a letter to the government. In this, he wrote that if an organization is established to treat the injured in the battlefield without discriminating on the basis of the nation, then the life of the people can be saved. 14 countries came to support him and adopted the Red Cross Treaty in 1864 at an international conference in Geneva. Today this organization is working in the world.

ब्रिटिश रेडक्रॉस सोसाइटी की स्थापना 4 अगस्त 1870 में की गई थी। जून 1851 में सोल्फरिनो युद्ध समाप्त होने के बाद स्विस नागरिक हेनरी डूनंट युद्ध क्षेत्र से गुजर रहे थे। घायलों की हालत देखकर उसे बहुत धक्का लगा। 15 हजार शव और जख्मी युद्ध के मैदान पर पड़े थे। बहुत सारे घायलों ने मेडिकल सहायता पहुंचने से पहले ही दम तोड़ दिया। हेनरी भागकर पास ही के एक गांव में पहुंचे। उन्होंने गांव की महिलाओं को एकजुट किया। इनकी मदद से उन्होंने घायलों की सेवा की। इसके बाद हेनरी ने सरकार को एक पत्र लिखा। इसमें उन्होंने लिखा कि यदि राष्ट्र के आधार पर भेदभाव किए बिना युद्ध के मैदान में घायलों के उपचार के लिए एक संस्था की स्थापना की जाए, तो लोगों की जान बचाई जा सकती है। उनके समर्थन में 14 देश आए और 1864 में जिनेवा में एक अंतरराष्ट्रीय कांफ्रेंस में रेडक्रॉस संधि को अपनाया। आज यह संस्था दुनियाभर में काम कर रही है।
