The purpose of these rules is to ensure the sale of certified medicines in the online portal in the country. It is compulsory to register online pharmacy with the Central Pharmaceutical Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) and to obtain business licenses from any state government. It is mandatory for a online pharmacy to get licenses from any state, and they can sell medicines in any state of the country. If the e-pharmacy violates any provision of the Drugs and Cosmetic Act, 1940, then its registration can be canceled. Apart from this, the e-pharmacy must also follow the Information and Technology Act, 2000. The e-pharmacy will have to keep the patient's information confidential, this information can not be shared with anyone other than the Center or the state government.

केन्द्रीय स्वास्थ्य मंत्रालय ने ई-फार्मेसी द्वारा ऑनलाइन दवाओं की बिक्री को रेगुलेट करने के लिए ड्राफ्ट नियम जारी किये हैं। इन नियमों का उद्देश देश में ऑनलाइन पोर्टल में प्रमाणित दवाओं की बिक्री सुनिश्चित करना है। ऑनलाइन फार्मेसी को केन्द्रीय दवा मानक नियंत्रण संगठन (CDSCO) में पंजीकरण करवाना तथा किसी राज्य सरकार से व्यापार लाइसेंस लेना अनिवार्य है। ऑनलाइन फार्मेसी को किसी एक ही राज्य से लाइसेंस लेना अनिवार्य है, एक ही लाइसेंस वे देश के किसी भी राज्य में दवाइयां बेच सकते हैं। यदि ई-फार्मेसी ड्रग्स एंड कास्मेटिक एक्ट, 1940 के किसी प्रावधान का उल्लंघन करती है तो इसका पंजीकरण रद्द किया जा सकता है। इसके अलावा ई-फार्मेसी को सूचना व प्रौद्योगिकी अधिनियम, 2000 का पालन भी करना होगा। ई-फार्मेसी को रोगी की जानकारी को गोपनीय रखना होगा, यह जानकारी केंद्र अथवा राज्य सरकार के अतिरिक्त किसी अन्य से साझा नहीं की जा सकती।
